5th Grade Science

Fifth grade has been very busy learning how and why scientists classify living things into groups.  Students have practiced sorting imaginary organisms into groups to get a better understanding of the classification system.  Students have learned the criteria of 5 large groups called Kingdoms.  The 5 kingdoms students should know are:  Animals, Plants, Fungi, Protists and Bacteria (also know as Moneran).  Students have also classified the animal kingdom further and  discovered how the vertebrate animals are classified and the characteristics of each.  During the week  of October 17th, we will look at the invertebrate animals with particular emphasis on the arthropods.  During the last week of October, students will explore how the plant kingdom is classified.  Chapter 6 will culminate with a field trip to the Georgia Aquarium on November 11 (more information below).  Our chapter 6 test will be around November 8-9, depending on how quickly we are able to finish up this chapter.

*******FIELD TRIP********

Our 5th Grade Field Trip will be on November 11, to the Georgia Aquarium.  Permission letters went home last week and MUST be returned by this Friday, October 21.  The cost for the trip is $15 per student and $23.50 for parents.  There is a limited number of tickets for parents ans will be available on a first come first serve basis.  IF WE DO NOT RECEIVE 95% OF THE MONEY FOR THE FIELD TRIP BY FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21, WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GO.  THE TRIP WILL BE CANCELLED.

Take home folders will go home again on Tuesday, October 25.  Please be sure you check your child’s folder for work and information sent home to you.  Please sign and return the folders by Thursday of that week.

Fifth Grade is privilege to be able to have 4-H come to our class once a month to bring us Agri-Science lessons.  Our first  4-H Meeting was held on October 17.  Our next 4-H class will be on November 15.  OUR COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT for 4-H community is to help raise money for the Ronald McDonald House.  We do so by collecting aluminum pop tabs from drink cans and food cans made of aluminum.  These are taken by our county 4-H leader to be recycled and the money obtained from these is donated to the Ronald McDonald House.  So please SAVE your pop tabs and send them in with your child.  Each of my 5 classes are competing to see you can collect the most.  At the end of April, the class collecting the most pop tabs will receive an ice cream party.  You can learn more about 4-H by clicking on the link “Pickens County 4-H”.
